Class Experience

Are you a big fan of Eric Carle? If yes, me too! If you don't know who he is, join this class to learn all about his books and illustration style, as you work to create four amazing projects of your own! In this four-week FLEX course, students will learn all about patterns, textures, and printmaking, as they create their own prints out of everyday items (Ex. toilet paper rolls, bubble wrap, celery, and more!).

Week #1 - Landscapes!
The first week will be filled with learning about who Eric Carle was, his art style, and how to create our very own prints. We will also be covering the basics of the color wheel by talking about primary and secondary colors. We will also read "Let's Paint A Rainbow" by Eric Carle and end by creating our very own landscapes out of our prints!

Week #2 - Yummy Yummy Food!
Week two will start off strong by reading the iconic "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. We will then work to develop some more prints, as we become more confident in our texture experimentations. We will end the week by completing project #2, which is to create our favorite foods.

Week #3 - Favorite Animals!
We'll start week three by building on our color wheel knowledge and diving into complementary colors. We will also be reading two books this week, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" and "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?" both by Eric Carle. This week will focus all on our favorite animals, as we will be working to create a beautiful collage that depicts them.

Week #4 - Get Creative, Go Crazy!
To start the final week off we will look over all of the paper that we have leftover from our last three projects and get creative by creating something out of all of the scraps. We will also be reading the book "The Mixed-Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle.

Although this class is a FLEX course and I will not be meeting with each student on Zoom, I will still be as interactive as possible, patiently waiting for the end of the week when I get to see your fantastic creations! I love lots of communication and am willing to help with any and every question you might have. I don't expect the students to have any prior knowledge, but I do expect them to come with an open mind and be ready to learn!

I will be posting two videos a week, both on Sunday. The first video will cover the readings and print-making assignments. The second video will cover each week's project and how they can go about creating these. I will also post a document each week that breaks down everything they learned, the assignment, some extra fun links, and links to each separate video (so if they forget something, you don't have to sit through the whole lesson!).

(This will be outlined again in the Homework section) At the end of each week, once you have completed the project, each student will have to
1. post their picture of their final work, along with a mini description of how they created it, to the class discussion board (Don't worry if you don't know how, I will provide an example description each week along with some tips on how to improve your artistic writing)
2. Respond to at least one other student's work (Again, I will provide information on how to write a response to someone's work to ensure that our critiques are respectful and encouraging)

It is important that you respond to at least one of your classmate's work each week, as this will provide the foundations for some great discussions... and might even give you some great ideas for your next project and new materials to try printing with!

Learning Goals

Students will improve their skills and understanding of printmaking, textures, patterns, and the color wheel! They will build their confidence with creative, out-of-the-box thinking and learn tons about Eric Carle and his artistic process along the way.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi!
My name is Tatiana and I will be teaching classes mainly focused on art and the environment. I believe when we open our minds and learn to fully express our creativity, we can achieve anything. Art allows for the mind to wander freely and when we learn to embrace the chase of our imagination, we can create some awesome pieces. Although my classes are fun and art-filled, we will still be learning lots of transferable skills and new information from the art as well as the mini-lesson after.
Let's get creating!
