Beginner Level
This course is a great introductory course to the world of horses for every horse-crazy kid! We will learn about the horse body, colors, markings, patterns, and breeds. As we move through these topics, students will become more fluent and comfortable with equine terminology. This is a great class to come together with students of similar interests and age to engage in discussion and learning about the animal they love, horses! As a teacher, I enjoy bringing class to life using photos, videos, slides and life examples. Class will have discussion times for students to express thoughts, ideas and experience of the topic at hand. Week 1- Introduction to the Course – Body Parts of the Horse - Students will learn general equine anatomy including parts of the body, parts of the hoof and general structure of the horse. We will dive into the importance of knowing the correct parts of the horse and play a game amongst each other of identifying each part. Week 2 - Colors and Markings – This week students will learn about horse coat colors and markings. We will practice identifying individual horses by their coloring and markings. Students will learn the differences in coloration and become comfortable with shades and variations within each coat color. Week 3 - Paint & Appaloosa Patterns – Students will now learn patterns in relation to paint and appaloosa horses. We will recognize individual patterns within each and develop a deeper understanding of what makes each unique. Week 4 – Pony Breeds – Let's dive into the world of ponies! What are the classifications of a pony? Students will learn about various pony breeds, and we will look at physical attributes, purpose, brief history and personality traits. Week 5 – Light Horse Breeds – Now onto common riding horse breeds! These horses are fast, athletic and fun to ride! Students will learn why these horses are typically used for riding and will gain a breed overview for these horses. Week 6 – Draft Horse Breeds – These are BIG horses! Get ready to be amazed by the power of the draft horse as students study these gentle giants from the lens of a horse lover!
Learning Goals
Students will gain a solid foundation of understanding of the parts of the horse, importance of anatomy, horse colors, and horse breeds. They will develop themselves further as horse lovers and become more invested in the animal that they love!
