Intermediate Level
This course is a great step-up course after the "Equine Science: Introduction to the Horse" course and is a great way for your horse-crazy kid to learn more about the animal they love, the horse! We will learn about the health of the horse in relation to common illnesses, vital signs, lameness issues, and equine dentistry. As a teacher, I enjoy bringing class to life using photos, videos, slides and life examples. Class will have discussion times for students to express thoughts, ideas and experience of the topic at hand. Week 1 - Introduction to the Course – Equine Vitals - Students will learn about what makes a horse healthy and the outline of BCS, vital signs, and terminology as we begin to dive into horse illnesses. Week 2 - Not a Healthy Horse - Students will learn about different illnesses that are more common in horses and explore each in relation to what each illness is. Week 3 - Blemish & Lameness Issues – What is a blemish? What is an unsoundness? This week, students will discover and learn about different blemishes and unsoundness issues within the horse. We will be using a hand-out supplied by the teacher. Week 4 - Anatomy & Equine Dentistry - Students will discover the anatomy of the horse in relation to their teeth, aging and development within the horse.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a solid foundation of understanding of the general health of the horse in relation to vitals, common illnesses, lameness issues and health protocols. They will develop themselves further as equine enthusiasts and become more invested in learning about the health of the horse.
