This class is part of the Advanced Horse Science Series for the serious horse enthusiast. This series is ideal for learners that want a scientific and thorough equine education. It is suggested for students that are involved in 4-H or FFA competitions, have aspirations for vet school or horse-related careers, or those that just want to be well versed in horse management and care. This class is a great follow-up to the Equine Leg Anatomy series investigating the equine leg. This class covers unsoundnesses and blemishes to the leg, common injuries, common disease and the basic treatment and prognosis. Class will be lecture-based. Drawings, videos, photos and interactive equine anatomy programs will be used to help the students become familiar with structures. While songs, poems and stories will be presented to help with retention we will do less of this than in earlier classes as it does not lend itself to that much levity! While I will continue to ask and encourage this participation no student will be pressured to do any activity that makes them uncomfortable. Students will be called on in class and discussion is strongly encouraged. There will be an assignment most weeks. These may include worksheets or short writing assignments. Week One Common conformation flaws and blemishes in the equine leg and hoof Overview of terminology Week Two Common diseases *Causes *Treatment *Outlook Week Three -Common injuries and diseases of the bone Week Four -Soft Tissue injuries and disease Week Five -Hoof injury and disease Week Six -- Putting it Together As a review students will each "reteach" the class about several assigned lamenesses.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to recognize injuries and disease. They will learn causes and factors that create susceptibility to these diseases and injuries. They will learn the basic care techniques. Students will be regularly cautioned that only a veterinarian is trained to discriminate between common and less common issues and one should ALWAYS be consulted in an actual case They will have strategies in place to help retain the information.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This class will show photos of injuries and dissections of equine anatomy. Please be sure that the student is prepared and will not be disturbed by blood or the internal views of a horse. This class is not taught by a veterinarian. It is an overview of the more common issues found in performance horses and is not a complete education on the subject. It is important to know that a a veterinarian should always be consulted in actual cases.
Supply List
I will supply necessary material. A copy of "Horse Anatomy, A Coloring Atlas" by Robert A. Kainer and Thomas O. McCracken is recommended by not required. Students will need to bring paper and writing utensils and have access to a copier.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
