Class Experience

In this class, with the teacher using one of her horses for demonstration purposes, students will learn about equine conformation and anatomy, and how it applies to many things we participate in while interacting with horses.
Understanding equine conformation and anatomy have applications that include:
~disciplines of riding,
~tack and equipment fitting,
~soundness or lameness in horses,
~breed characteristics,
~veterinary care,
~interaction with equine professionals
including veterinarians, farriers, trainers, tack and supply stores, feed stores, and other areas of our interaction with, riding, and training horses.

All of the classes this teacher offers are comprehensive classes (begin at the beginning unless otherwise stated as "intermediate" or "advanced") designed for the beginner/novice horse owner and prospective horse owner, providing important information related to progression to the intermediate, up to the advanced levels of horsemanship and equine management.

The first half of this class relates to lecture/demonstration regarding equine conformation: examples and discussion include "excellent" - "satisfactory" - "poor". Opinions may vary on the three classifications dependent on what activities the horse is participating in, aka "use and purpose". For instance, what may be considered "excellent" conformation for a western pleasure show horse could be considered "poor" conformation for a Hunter or Jumper.

The second half of the class relates to possible injuries and/or conditions horses may sustain or acquire that may/are directly, or indirectly related to their conformation, the activities they are participating in, or inappropriate training methods and techniques that have been applied.

Injuries and/or conditions the teacher uses as examples in the class are compiled from her personal 50+ years interaction and experience with thousands of horses, some owned by her, but most owned by others.

NOTE: The goal of these one-time or flexible schedule classes that will be regularly offered is to provide the fundamentals (a correct, strong foundation of the basics is essential for safe success with horses), as well as the intermediate to advanced levels of education to students regarding 'Everything Horses'.

Students will become thoroughly knowledgeable about horses in a broad spectrum of areas. Classes will provide safe, practical, and effective approaches and methods for the continuing care and maintenance of horses. The focus will be on students caring for and maintaining horses on their own property, however, various stabling situations and facilities will be discussed in a variety of classes.

This class will be offered as a one-time class. After you take my classes you will realize that there are simple time-tested methods that help people avoid causing horses accidental suffering because of incorrect handling and care techniques. The goal we strive for in our interaction with horses should always be geared toward comfort, safety, correctness, and harmony for all participants.

Learning Goals

This class will teach students about equine conformation and anatomy. The class will show the importance of knowing and understanding the fundamentals in regard to horses in order to have correct, confident, and safe interactions with horses. This class will also help students regarding their interaction with other people in the equine industry i.e. veterinarians, farriers, chiropractors, etc. You will see that once you are educated in equine conformation and anatomy, leading to future classes being offered in which I will teach proper tack and equipment fitting, grooming, handling/training, identification of lameness and/or health issues, purchasing a horse, etc, it will make your horse experience enjoyable and safer for both you and the horse.

Future topics studied and discussed, but not limited to, will include:

° Conformation/Colors/Markings
° Breeds of Horses
° Selecting A Horse to Purchase
° Disciplines of Riding
° Tack and Equipment
° Safe Handling Techniques
° Basic Handling i.e. Haltering, Leading,
° Grooming
° Hoof Care
° Saddling/Bridling - Western and.
  English Style/Disciplines
° Psychological Aspects of
  Horse/Human Interaction
° Feeds and Feeding
° Stabling: Keeping Your Horse At Your
  Home/Boarding Stables
° Basic Veterinary Care
° Deworming/Vaccination Schedules

Developing a correct foundation regarding our safe interaction with, and care and maintenance of horses is of utmost importance in order to achieve harmonic relationships that stand the test of time.

Interaction between teacher and students will allow students to ask questions via the Outschool messaging system after the class, collect numerous hand-outs that students can put in their files and/or print and build a notebook of information.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
For the past 45+ years I have been a successful instructor/teacher, trainer, clinician, show and events judge, barn manager, veterinary assistant, author, and host of a radio show focusing on horses and other animals. I also taught an accredited college course on equine management for many years. My experience is the culmination of several decades training horses and instructing various ages of students in many disciplines, with experience working with most breeds and cross-breeds of horses. My primary goal in teaching students is safety and correct handling techniques when interacting with horses. Of utmost importance to me is the safety of the person handling the horse and the safety of the horse they are working with. Over the years I have seen that there is more than one way to accomplish a variety of tasks when interacting with horses. However, people who use or teach incorrect and/or abusive techniques, whether intentionally or unintentionally, may have successful outcomes for periods of time but eventually the "holes" in training will become evident. They may also do fine if they are familiar with the horses they are interacting with quirks or "triggers", but through my work re-training horses with issues, I don't just put a "band-aid fix" on a horse when re-training. Instead, I begin at the beginning of foundation training in order to find out what a horse knows, where the holes in training are, and also so the horse can learn in a correct, consistent way that avoids confusion and it helps the horse become a safe, relaxed, willing partner. My goal in building a correct, solid training foundation for both horse and human, is to avoid accidents in the present, and also in the future. A systematic training approach for people and horses that builds upon the previous training, comparable to the learning scale in schools, has proven to me that safe, harmonic partnerships can be achieved. Having a systematic approach doesn't mean that we can't be flexible regarding addressing individual students and their horses interaction, however, as with people, horses also learn and respond to a clear and consistent approach during interaction which avoids confusion.
