LEARN BY SOLVING PROBLEMS The best way for students to learn mathematics is by solving problems. In fact, the best way for students to learn mathematics is to try to solve problems that they don’t know how to do. When students discover something on their own, they’ll understand it much better than if someone just tells them. This class focuses on guiding students through creative problem-solving and on teaching them to apply their knowledge in a wide variety of scenarios rather than rote memorization of mathematical facts. Topics covered in the class include one-step equations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) and take the learner through to multi-step equations wherein the learner will use all of the operations in order to solve for an unknown. HOMEWORK AND NOTES In order to build a reference library which the student can use when working on homework, (s)he will be required to take notes. This will ensure greater success when the student is working independently. PREREQUISITE Must be able to add, subtract, multiple and divide integers, fractions, and decimals. ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS 1) Students’ cameras and microphones must be turned on during the class. 2) Students must have the ability to think critically and logically to analyze the topics covered in the class. CLASS FORMAT This class is designed to include lots of interaction and discussion. It is an interactive class, one in which the student will be able to freely ask and answer questions. Therefore, students need to have a working camera and microphone turned on during the class. EVALUATION 50% Class participation 50% Homework Completion

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a teacher and have been teaching since 1998. I live in Colorado, where I earned a master’s degree from Colorado State University, and my principal licensure in educational leadership from the University of Denver. I taught mathematics, literature & writing (amongst other things) to High School students for over a dozen years, and had a life-changing experience when I moved to the mountains with my husband. Arriving at this location— the home of (primarily) brown bears and deer— I declared myself to be in business as a full-time educator. It soon became evident that few persons in the mountains overheard the declaration, but through the far-reaching wonders of Outschool, I am now able to combine the joys of peaceful mountainous solitude with my husband and my passion for teaching.
