A weekly movement class where students develop hand-eye coordination, visual tracking and auditory processing through fun exercises using racquetballs & beanbags. [brain gym, juggling, dyslexia, focus, workout, bal a vis x, circus, Waldorf]

Class experience

In Waldorf schools, mornings generally start with movement and coordination exercises to liven up the children, and help them feel present in mind and body. As a certified Waldorf teacher, I try to include movement in all of my classes because I have seen firsthand how it benefits children. I also know from personal experience that fun activities such as juggling, poi spinning and hula-hooping ameliorate one’s focus and mood.

- 2 or 3 racquetballs - 2 or 3 scarves (light material that will float in the air ) - 2 or 3 bean bags or hacky sacks to throw and catch in one hand - appropriate space to move while staying on camera; -- without sharp corners -- an even floor which allows for bouncing of the racquetballs - water to stay hydrated
It is important to have an open space where children are not at risk of hitting their head when bending down to pick up a ball which is rolling away from them. Using proper footwear would prevent children from hitting their toes against furniture in the room.
Some of the exercises in this class resemble exercises which are precursors to juggling. Here are some articles outlining the benefits of juggling.

"Since mental rotation skills enhance spatial imagination, problem solving and mathematical skills, it may be assumed that juggling training enhances also other cognitive domains and is worth implementing in the education process."
