"Epic Storytelling With ChatGPT"

In this one-hour session, students will learn how to prompt ChatGPT as part of the writing process, polish their understanding of literary terms, and create their own epic fiction!

Here is the lesson plan:

Opening Set: Intro to Fantasy and Science Fiction
Objective: Students will understand what distinguishes the two from other subgenres of fiction.

Discussion and explanation:
What is your favorite example of these genres? Why? 
Identify the writing process steps.
Explain ChatGPT
Determine students’ experience with it
Discuss expectations of AI’s writing skills

Model task with screen sharing:
-Submitting a basic prompt
-Demonstrating how the chat features can refine our initial prompt
ChatGPT will question me about specific literary elements of my prompt
-I’ll answer with specific directions
-ChatGPT will write me a fantasy story based on my specifications
-Discuss the generated story and how we can practice showing instead of telling to improve the story’s narrative

Practice and sharing:
Students will have time to practice using the AI. They submit prompts and then answer specific questions to improve their initial prompt. If they are satisfied with their story, they may read it to the class. 

Reflection:
-Revise the areas of prose where we can add details
-Evaluate where ChatGPT did not meet our requirements
-Consider how ChatGPT can be used to speed up the writing process
-Identify what areas we need to remain skilled in to publish quality writing

Students will comprehend what ChatGPT is and how it can be used as a tool to improve writing.
Students will identify and understand science fiction and high fantasy as fictional subgenres.
Students will learn how to use ChatGPT to write a first draft. 
Students will see what it means to say that good writing shows it doesn't tell.
Students will practice using more sophisticated prompts to leverage AI's capabilities.
