Entomology: The Monarch Butterfly

The Monarch butterfly was placed on the endangered species list in 2022. I am lucky enough to raise and release Monarchs at home and they have become one of my favorite insects. In this multi-day science class, students will dive into the world of metamorphosis as we become acquainted with the Monarch butterfly. 2 lessons//1 Week
Week 1Lesson 1Day 1Students will identify Monarchs and explore Metamorphosis. We will learn the anatomy of every stage in this cycle and end class by becoming familiar with the Monarch’s ecology, behavior and vulnerabilities.Lesson 2Day 2Students will recognize milkweed and its importance. We will examine seasonal generations and track the “great migration.” Students will learn how we can support our pollinators and what we can do specifically for Monarchs.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Scientific terminology will be used throughout the class to discuss butterflies, their life cycle, and challenges they face.
