40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Class Experience This will be a delightful and enjoyable class that teaches young learners ages 5-7 how to enhance the lives of their chickens through the use of entertaining activities. Chickens can get bored leading to harmful behaviors. Bored chickens can become aggressive and this can lead to a negative experience for the young chicken farmer. It is difficult to watch chickens attack a weaker member in the flock. We will begin with a discussion input from all learners that includes what makes chickens happy, why they get bored, chicken behavior and how to entince chickens to engage with new toys and then launch into slides of different project ideas finishing up with making 2 simple projects. The projects will be completed by the end of class and the student can take their completed project right out to their chicken coop, hang it up and watch their chickens respond. Students will be given a copy of the written instructions for all projects included in the discussion and slides. I have been so pleased with the level of involvement of young children in the care of their chickens. From personal experience I know how beneficial this can be to a children's development of compassion, responsibility and self-esteem.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO REVIEW MY PROFILE.
Welcome, I am very excited about the opportunity to teach children through the outschool program. We were a homeschooling family but our children are grown now; out seeking their own learning opportunities and adventures. I loved the creativity and non-traditional aspects of homeschooling and am thrilled to be teaching children again.
I am a pediatric occupational therapist with 40 years of experience providing support to children with sensory processing and learning challenges. I have a BS and an MS in occupational therapy. Obviously, I love my profession. My Masters Degree opened the door for me to teach at the college level which I did for several years. Then we moved to a rural area where the nearest college was 2 hours away. I turned to teaching children and adults in my community. I loved the intimacy and creativity that was part of this new teaching milieu. From Maryland we moved on to Northern New Mexico where I continued my community involvement.
I have led large professional training programs but I find myself draw to smaller classes and frankly I love children. Their curiosity is always invigorating.
As a pediatric occupational therapist I spend a large amount of time developing creative ways for children to learn new information despite possible learning, sensory or motor challenges. It is a passion of mine to adapt projects and activities so every child, no matter their skill level can participate. I hope to have the opportunity to work with students through outschool.com that are perhaps struggling with learning in a more traditional classroom setting. I love tailoring a program to meet the child's learning style. I am known within my profession for my creativity and enthusiasm.
Over the last 40 years, I have seen the benefit of using movement and sensory exploration to facilitate learning. Children have an innate drive to learn and accomplish their goals. When given a supportive environment they gain the ability to be independent learners. All of my classes will involve the children in choice and decision making, hands on activities and movement. I believe in incorporating social awareness into all that I do.
Personally, I love the outdoors and spend most of my time gardening and kayaking when not engaged in a creative craft. I love building and refinishing furniture, multimedium art, painting, and teaching. I believe that art is an excellent way of teaching children the basic building blocks for learning such as attending to task, problem solving, handling frustration, creativity and self-expression.
I live at close to 7000 feet on a mountain in Northern New Mexico with my husband, two dogs, fish, chickens and ducks. Taos is a very unique town. It is somewhat isolated except in the winter months when we boast about our wonderful skiing and snowboarding.. Our population is 5600 people. Some families have lived here for hundreds of years and bring a depth and a richness to the area that is wonderful and some were drawn to the uniqueness of the community and the incredible beauty.
Taos Pueblo is the oldest surviving Pueblo in the U.S. The people of this Pueblo frequently open their celebrations to visitors from all over the world, providing a glimpse of ancient traditions that touch the soul.
