Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
If you have earned your Vocabulary Supersleuth badge from parts 1 and 2 of Vocabulary Supersleuths, you are prepared to continue solving the mysteries of words! In this follow-up class, you will learn a whole new set of roots. We will use the roots from the first two sections, as well as our new roots, to determine the meanings of words.

Students will write the roots and accompanying information on a set of note cards. They will add these note cards to their binder from the previous classes. By the end of the session, they will have a nice resource to refer back to.

At the beginning of each class, we will review the roots from previous weeks before diving into our new content. Each week we will study 2-4 Greek and Latin roots. The roots we study each week will all be related. I will introduce several vocabulary words containing our new roots. I will ask the students to find the root in each set of vocabulary words. They will then try to figure out the meaning of each root. We will discuss the spelling of the root and look for any spelling patterns we notice. I will also ask students to think of words based on that root. Additionally, I will introduce some new words that have these roots. This is where the detective work comes in! We will dissect each of these words to see if we can figure out the meaning of these new words based on what we know about the roots.

I will post a print-out in the classroom each week. Please print it out, as we will use it during class. We will fill out the information on the print-out, then cut it out, and glue it onto the notecard. The students will need one notecard per root. They will use colored pencils to add information to each notecard so they can quickly locate the information they need.

Each notecard will have the following information:
- root
- origin (Greek or Latin)
- meaning
- words containing these roots
- pictures to help them remember the meanings of the vocabulary words

We will be using Nearpod during class. Nearpod is an interactive classroom which enhances the student learning experience. Students do not need any additional equipment. I will post a link in the chat box. Students will simply click on the link and a new browser will open. We will use Nearpod to play some fun word games. By working on these roots in varying activities, students will commit them to memory and have a good understanding of each root by the end of the session.
Learning Goals
Students will increase their vocabulary and improve their spelling skills.

As a homeschooling mom, I have taught my own children Greek and Latin roots. This has prepared them well for the SAT, and has also helped them in their English classes. I also have a degree in elementary education.
