US Grade 1 - 3
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Meeting with friends to discuss books is so much fun! Books open a child's world to new ideas, vocabulary, cultures, and activities, and they allow kids to experience all sorts of adventures. This book club is for children who are reading above their grade level. It is also an immersive learning experience for English language learners where the children are able to use their English conversational skills with a native English speaker. The CEFR level for this book club is intermediate to advanced English (B1-C2 ) . Each book club meeting, our book discussion will begin with a focus activity such as a quote from the book, a scene from the book, or a description of the setting or a character. Our group discussion will include discussing literary elements (plot, setting, characters, etc.), the assigned reading response questions, and the children's opinions about the book. Discussing the book will help the learners with their reading comprehension by helping them to think critically about the literary elements in the book. Also, our book discussion will allow the children to hear different perspectives about the characters, plot, etc in each book which can help them to understand the characters' emotions and motivations better, as well as using textual evidence to support their opinions. The homework reading time will be different for each child. I recommend reading one to two chapters each day. Some children may spend 1-2 hours each week reading the assigned chapters while others may read the chapters in 2-4 hours each week or longer. If a learner doesn't finish the readings before our meeting, that's okay except the book will be discussed, so there will be spoilers. I will also upload the reading response questions to the classroom for each assigned chapters. A PDF of pages to make a reading journal is in the classroom so that it can be printed to be used with a two pocket folder with 3 hole punch prongs, or it can be used with a 3 ring binder. Please read reviews and summaries about each book so that you can decide if your child may read the book. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ is a good website to use or an internet search with the book title and the words book review after it will show different reviews of each book. Kirkus Reviews is another website where you can read reviews of each book. ****All learners must be enrolled in the club to be fair to the other enrolled learners.**** Fall Schedule November 6 The Wild Robot by Peter Brown Chapters 1-20 November 13 The Wild Robot by Peter Brown Chapters 21-40 November 20 The Wild Robot by Peter Brown Chapters 41-60 December 4 The Wild Robot by Peter Brown Chapters 61-80
