US Grade 4 - 6
In this ongoing tutoring class, students will receive individualized instruction in English and reading skills. Week 1- The instructor will conduct an informal assessment of the child's reading ability. This will be accomplished through reading a specifically selected passage, after communicating with the child's parent via classroom and email. We will play some simple word games and complete activities to assess strength with phonics, comprehension and grammar. Week 2 and so on- The instructor will target specific skills and provide instruction and practice in these each week following the first week, continuing to build on previous knowledge. The instructor will maintain communication with the guardian to see how the instruction is affecting the child's proficiency, and will make adjustments as needed to the curriculum. There will be informal assessments throughout the tutoring sessions.
Learning Goals
Students will show improvement in reading, grammar and comprehension skills.
Other Details
Supply List
Students will be shown how to annotate on their device, so they can engage in interactive lessons. If a child has a device, such as Chromebook, where annotation is not possible, they will need a white board and marker. Occasionally they may need paper and a marker or crayon. Pencil will not show up through the camera when I am trying to check a child's work. Books may be requested in individual cases. I will provide Amazon links for ordering these, or children may check out books from a library, when needed. Often I create stories of my own for kids to read.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Asbury College (University)
I believe children learn best through play and fun. For thirty plus years, I have relied upon this knowledge to help young children learn. In my experience, kids want to read, but sometimes the mechanics seem overwhelming. Breaking reading down into bite-sized pieces, where kids experience success, is the key to igniting a passion for reading and learning.
