In this hands-on class, we will look at some "Crazy English Spellings" through the lens of meaning and discover that they aren't actually crazy after all. Students will come away with a useful tool that they can use to help them understand the language they use to a greater level. On encountering a difficult word, they will be able to follow the flow chart provided to find ways to understand the spelling and make it memorable.
I am an accredited Orton Gillingham Practitioner with 8 years of experience working both in school and in private practice. I am trained and experienced in supporting learners who struggle to learn to read and spell. The approach taught in this class is an adapted Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) approach. Evidence has found that SWI instruction is beneficial in regular classrooms and for children who struggle with spelling and vocabulary. After working with many dyslexic learners, my sense is that this approach works better with the way the brain learns vocabulary and spelling than more standard instruction practices. I have adapted this approach to simplify it.
There will be no homework.
A one-page handout will be supplied. I will also send out notes from the session.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
