Class Experience

In this class, students will review how to construct and distinguish compound and complex sentences, yet expand their understanding of the meaningful parts of these sentences. The teacher will share a PowerPoint presentation that contains all the lesson's content. As the class progresses, the teacher will pose questions to gauge understanding. Students will also be free to ask questions throughout the lesson by raising their hands to be acknowledged. In the first part of the lesson, the teacher will assess whether students have an understanding of compound sentences and how they are constructed. The teacher will address any questions or misconceptions as well as explain the components of a compound sentence. The teacher will further expound on the concept of FANBOYS or coordinating conjunctions, their meanings, and how to use each one appropriately. The students will then be formatively assessed through a sentence-construction activity. In the latter part of the lesson, the teacher will present and explain the meaning of a complex sentence. Since a complex sentence contains an independent and a dependent clause, the students should be able to demonstrate their mastery of an independent clause while the teacher extends their knowledge of a dependent clause. Moreover, the students will identify subordinating conjunctions and understand their use in dependent clauses. They will learn two ways in which to construct a complex sentence and practice forming original sentences using the studied discrepancies.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a 30-year English language arts teacher, I have seen the need for young students to show more variety in their writing. Not only should their sentence types vary, but they should also be accurate in structure. I am able to break these concepts down so that students understand with clarity and ease.
