In this class, students will learn to distinguish and construct simple and compound sentences. The teacher will share a PowerPoint presentation that contains all the lesson's content. As the class progresses, the teacher will pose questions to gauge understanding. Students will also be free to ask questions throughout the lesson by raising their hands to be acknowledged. In the first half of the lesson, the teacher will assess whether students understand the meaning of a simple sentence by asking questions and subsequently share the meaning. The teacher will then break down and explain the two parts of a simple sentence (subject and predicate) as well as give examples. Students will then analyze a set of sentences to determine the subject and predicate in each one. At the end of this section, the students will form their own set of three simple sentences and share them with the teacher and the class. In the second half of the lesson, the teacher will similarly assess whether students understand the meaning of a compound sentence. The teacher will clear up any misconceptions and reiterate or introduce compound sentences as containing two independent clauses. Examples of clauses will be given, and students will identify which are independent. A more extensive explanation of compound sentences will then be introduced to the class by clarifying the importance and use of coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). This section's activity will also entail the students' presentation of their original compound sentences.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of simple and compound sentences in order to enhance variety in their writing skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a 30-year English language arts teacher, I have seen the need for young students to show more variety in their writing. Not only should their sentence types vary, but they should also be accurate in structure. I am able to break these concepts down so that students understand with clarity and ease.
