Class Experience
In each one-on-one tutoring session, students will work to improve 1-2 specific skills that are most relevant to the student's homework and/or learning needs. Most students bring in one homework assignment that they need help with, and I break the assignment down into manageable chunks. Then, I support the student in understanding the assignment, reading any assigned texts, and writing their responses. Because I tutor a wide age range, the specific reading and writing skills can vary a lot. I can help younger learners sound-out new words and write in complete sentences. I also help older learners understand textbook chapters and write essays. Sometimes, a student needs support beyond just doing homework. For example, they may be reading below grade level or feel really anxious about an upcoming test. In these instances, I can create custom lesson plans for the student based on their needs.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their writing skills as appropriate for their grade level. Skills may include: writing clear sentences, organizing information in a logical way, and supporting an opinion with evidence.Students will improve their basic reading skills as appropropriate for their grade level. Skills may include: sounding-out unfamiliar words, understanding differences between fiction and non-fiction, and reading aloud fluently.

I have been teaching and tutoring English and Language Arts skills for the past 10 years. I started with teaching poetry writing workshops for grade schoolers at Carbondale Public Library from 2015-2018, while I was getting my Master's of Fine Arts in Poetry. After graduating, I volunteered with Open Books in Chicago as a writing tutor from 2018-2019. In 2020, I took my experience to Outschool where I've been helping students have more fun in English class for the last five years.Reviews
