Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Before each class, I will post a PDF of the myth. We will read the stories in class together.

In this highly interactive course, I will begin each class with a quick-write, a writing prompt related to the day's reading. Students will be given 3-5 minutes to write their responses, and I will allow time for students to share their writing with their peers.

I will then read the myth, stopping periodically to check for understanding. After reading, we will spend the remaining time in class discussing the myth's protagonist/antagonist, plot development, conflict, and theme.

The syllabus for this class is as follows (subject to change based on student needs):

Week 1: Prometheus -- How man was created
Week 2 Pandora -- How troubles entered the world
Week 3: Psyche and Eros -- Love
Week 4: Demeter -- How the seasons came to be -- and
Echo and Narcissus -- The first "echo" and how the flower narcissus came to be
Week 5: Arachne and Athena -- How spiders came to be -- and Midas -- Be careful what you wish for
Week 6: Perseus Part 1 -- The Head of Medusa
Week 7: Perseus Part 2 and Odysseus -- Who is the real hero?
Week 8: Orpheus -- Faith and Trust

As an optional assessment, students will be asked to choose a god or goddess, research him/her further, and make a poster (either hand-drawn or digital). Students will post their creation in the Classroom for teacher and peer feedback.
