Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Come build a grammar notebook with me! As students create and craft their notebooks, they will be engaged in a meaningful note-taking format that fosters a deeper understanding of writing and grammar. They can have as much fun and be as creative as they want when designing their pages with interactive flip tabs, colors, etc. Once completed, the grammar notebook becomes a clever study-guide and reference material that they can continue to use for years.

**The "Build a Grammar Notebook" Series contains 7 units each contained within its own FLEX class listing on Outschool. It is important to follow the units in numerical order! This allows for the students' notebooks and table of contents to match my own; they may become confused by my references to previous lessons if the content is taken out of order. The content is designed to complement regular English Language Arts instruction for grades 4-8.**

There are NO live meetings for this class. The material will be posted weekly to be viewed and completed during the week at your convenience. Each week students will receive a step-by-step guide video from me. Within this video I will introduce them to the lesson topic, walk them through crafting their notebook page, while also providing notes and activities to teach that week's grammatical subject. Activities may include worksheets, PowerPoints, flash cards, games, and other similar learning-focused experiences. Students will always have a discussion post assignment where they will interact with each other and the teacher. Homework will ask students to post an image of their completed notebook page to the classroom and positively evaluate the work of classmates. I will also provide feedback on their notes.

Unit 2 of our series covers grammar rules involving sentences. This is a 6 week course.

Week Topic

Week 1 Sentence Type

Week 2 Subjects & Predicates

Week 3 Compound Subjects & Predicates

Week 4 Simple & Compound Sentences

Week 5 Independent & Dependent Clauses

Interaction: Students will have the chance to interact in several ways throughout this course. There are three types of interaction that they will participate in:
1. Student- Courseware: Students will log on to the classroom to watch instructional videos. This will provide a visual, teacher-led guide to assemble their notebook. Within the notebook,, there will be fill-in notes along with independent practice activities.
2. Student-Teacher: The teacher will be available daily to answer questions or concerns students may ask within the classroom. Each week students will interact with a discussion board answering guided questions. The teacher will actively engage with student answers. Students will also be expected to post images of their completed notebook pages (both their notes and completed practice assignments). This will allow the teacher to give personalized feedback and track their progress.
3. Student-Student: Our first class will always involve personal introductions. Students will interact with their peers through the regular weekly discussion questions. Students will also be presenting their notebook progress through weekly images shared with the class. Students are encouraged to ask questions and make positive comments on others' posts. Students will also work together to complete various formative assessments each week, such as contributing to a class-wide answer garden, building class word banks, playing "I have, who has", filling in mad-libs as a class, peer-to-peer quizzes, and presenting mini-posters.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their knowledge of grammar, especially in regards to sentences.
