Class Experience

In this course, students will learn different forms of nouns (gerund, plural, and possessive). The teacher will use a PowerPoint presentation to convey important facts and examples of each objective. The lesson will begin by engaging the students to assess whether they understand the meaning of a gerund. Next, the teacher will discuss the meaning of gerunds and how they are formed. Examples will be provided in a list and sentence form. Students will then do a short activity in which they form their own sentences using gerunds. The next objective will be making nouns plurals. There are well-know rules of making nouns plural, such as adding "s" or "es." However, other rules are not as well-known, and many young writers have difficulty forming the plurals of certain words. In this section of the lesson, they will receive and discuss eight rules of making nouns plural. For each rule, the teacher will give a list of examples. The students will then be given an activity that requires them to form the plural of several singular nouns. Following this activity, they will write and share their own sentence examples using the plural forms of nouns. The last objective of the lesson will be forming possessive nouns. This section will clear up misunderstandings of what to do with "the apostrophe" and "the s" when showing possession. The students will be given several examples of how to form the possessive of certain nouns based on their endings. In a short activity, students will comprise sentences (a short story) using certain nouns in the possessive forms and share selected sentences with the class. By the end of this lesson, students will have written several original sentences to show an understanding of the concepts.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of three forms and functions of nouns (gerund, plural, and possessive) and use these forms effectively in sentences.

This class is being offered as an important segment in building a solid foundation of English grammar. Grammar has always been a skill set that I have taken ownership of and genuinely enjoyed. Consequently, implementing these skills has undergirded my ability to become an effective writer and writing teacher. Therefore, it is my goal to replicate my knowledge base into the minds of my students.
