In this ongoing class, you will learn how to draw information from reading fun fiction and non-fiction texts. You'll learn how to find verbs, adverbs, nouns, noun phrases, adjectives, and adverbs. You'll learn how to write using different types of sentences, how to use the linking words 'and, but and or', and how to use 'when, if, that and because'. You'll learn when to use a full stop, commas, apostrophes, question marks and exclamation marks alongside a variety of other things you need to...
Each week we will briefly concentrate on learning a different aspect of how English sentences are constructed. For example, nouns, noun phrases, verbs, adjectives and adverbs and how we use them when we write. Come and learn how to recognise these when you read different texts! Over time, we will also look at why some sounds read differently in sentences (soft 'c'; hard 'c'; soft 'g'; silent 'k', 'g', and 'w'; words with 'tch'; 'wh' and 'ph' words; and words ending in 'le'; 'el'; 'al'; and 'il')? When do we add 'ing'; 'ed'; 'er'; 'est' and 'y' to words? How do we use capital letters, commas and apostrophes, questions marks and exclamation marks, as well as suffixes and prefixes? There's so much to learn and you'll learn it by watching, reading, writing and practicing using worksheets. Come and find out the answers to all these questions! We will be reading some amazing short stories and look at how they have been written, the language the author has used, and the pictures the story paints in our heads. We will start to look at personification and how the author has given life to inanimate objects!
I have more years of experience than I care to think about (!) in delivering English to children from primary age, right through to young adults. I have taught many young adults who failed to pass their English GCSE in school to gain the almost equivalent Functional Skills English qualification after they have left school. This is a topic I am extremely passionate about - literacy skills are a vital necessity in life. If a person can read, they can learn. If they can read, they can write. If they know the rules for grammar and punctuation, they can write well! Outside of Outschool, I also work as a proofreader for students at two local universities and as an editor for authors of both fiction and non-fiction books. I am also a published author.
Homework Offered
Your child may like to finish their paragraphs/short stories that they began in class if they don't finish in time. I am always happy to read them after class finishes if you would like to upload them to me.Assessments Offered

Students will need a pencil, an eraser, and lined paper to write on. You may like to purchase a workbook for them. Workbooks can be purchased here (but you may also be able to purchase them elsewhere): https://www.amazon.co.uk/RHINO-200x165-Page-Exercise-Book/dp/B00JHDP9KC/ (UK) All worksheets will be provided by me and will need to be downloaded and printed out prior to class so that your student can work at the same pace as other students.
Hi! Welcome to my profile and thank you for visiting! I've worked in primary education for more years than I care to think about. Yes, I'm probably somewhat older than the majority of teachers on here, but don't let that put you off. I have a...
