In this ongoing class, students will learn a variety of functional English writing skills, including how to construct letters, articles, reports, and emails along with a multitude of other key skills required in adulthood.

In this ongoing class, you will learn all the basic Functional English writing skills. In week one (week beginning 12.6.2023) you will learn how to work out who your audience is (who is going to be reading your writing), whether you should be writing formally or informally, and the purpose of your texts. In week two (week beginning 19.6.2023) you will learn how to plan and structure letters and emails. In week three, (week beginning 26/6/2023) you will learn how to plan and structure articles and reports. In week four, (week beginning 3.7.2023) you will create an informational leaflet using P.E.E. paragraphs. In week five, (week beginning 10.7.2023) you will learn how to write persuasively. In later weeks, you will learn how to write about your opinions, how to use grammar effectively (verb tenses, modal verbs, common mistakes with verbs), how to use correct punctuation, spelling tricks, making plurals, prefixes and suffixes, common spelling mistakes, and commonly confused words.

Prior to the pandemic, I spent many years delivering English Functional Skills to young adults who were completing various Apprenticeships. This was part of the government initiative that provides that all students should have the key skills to function in the adult world and was aimed at students who had not attained any qualifications at school. A lot of students I taught had very low self-confidence in the subject and I was able to help them attain a L2 qualification (equivalent to a grade 4 pass at GCE level).Reviews
