In this one-on-one course, you will gain a diverse set of skills and techniques to excel in English essay writing. The course's structure is designed to be flexible, accommodating individual learning preferences and progress. In each session, we will focus on a specific topic or aspect of essay writing, tailoring the content to your individual interests and goals. Before each session, you will have the opportunity to share an assignment you are working on, choose your own topic of interest and skill, or I can provide an assignment based on your needs and goals. The following is a sample schedule that can be implemented if the student is not bringing their own assignment to our course but would like to craft an original essay over the course of ten meetings. Class 1: Introductions and Goals Our first meeting will focus on getting to know you as a person and as a student. I'm excited to learn about your experiences with writing and understand your goals for the course. We will assess your current writing habits to help clarify and prioritize your goals. Class 2: Planning to Write In our second meeting, we will choose a writing prompt and discuss potential topic ideas for your essay. We will practice prewriting strategies such as brainstorming, freewriting, and clustering, which help with ideation and overcoming writer's block. Class 3: Structuring and Organizing an Essay Next, we'll focus on organizing information and structuring your essays coherently. We'll use graphic organizers and outlines to create a solid foundation for your writing. These tools will help you organize your thoughts and arguments, making the writing process smoother and more enjoyable. Class 4: Developing Strong Body Paragraphs We will focus on developing strong body paragraphs that support your thesis statement. You'll learn to craft compelling topic sentences, provide supporting evidence, and analyze your ideas in a convincing way. Class 5: Crafting Engaging Introduction Paragraphs A captivating introduction sets the tone for your entire essay. In this session, we'll focus on creating an engaging introduction paragraph. You'll learn techniques to grab your reader's attention and develop a clear and compelling thesis statement. Class 6: Crafting Memorable Conclusion Paragraphs As we approach the end of your essay, we'll work on crafting a memorable conclusion paragraph. You'll learn how to summarize your main points effectively and reinforce your main arguments while providing closure to your essay. Classes 7-8: Mastering Writing Strategies We'll explore various writing strategies to enhance your essays. From using strong language to creating smooth transitions, you'll learn practical techniques to improve your writing. Classes 9-10: The Art of Editing and Revision As we embrace the revision process as an essential element of the writing process, you'll come to appreciate how it empowers you to refine your writing, elevating it from good to exceptional. We'll work on eliminating unnecessary wordiness, clarifying ambiguous sentences, and polishing your essay for coherence. As this course can be adapted to your specific goals and needs, we can adapt the course schedule to include: - planning for and writing various essay types, including argumentative, narrative, and expository essays - adapting your tone to suit different essay types and effectively communicate with your intended audience - incorporating different sentence structures, such as simple, compound, and complex sentences, to add rhythm and depth to your writing - using rhetorical devices, such as metaphors, similes, and rhetorical questions, to add depth and persuasion to your writing - analyzing, incorporating, and citing evidence from other sources Class time may include opportunities to set goals, analyze model texts that exemplify strong examples of that week's writing goal, complete short writing exercises, or review previous work. We may spend time critiquing and revising the organization, mechanics, and language of a current or past assignment. Feedback may also include identifying patterns of error in your writing and developing rules or strategies to correct them. My teaching style is conversational, collaborative, and encouraging. I will provide clear explanations, concrete examples, and practical exercises to reinforce your understanding of essay writing concepts. Additionally, I'll offer constructive feedback to help you strengthen your writing skills progressively. This course is designed to accommodate learners of all skill levels, from beginners to more experienced writers. All you need is a passion for improving your writing and a willingness to engage actively in the learning process. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to make a schedule request.
