Welcome to the Creative Writing Practice class!

In this on-going class, learners will write a creative piece of writing in the format of a ‘book/short story’. However, prior to explaining the class structure, I feel that it is important for you to know the significance and importance of creative writing. Creative writing is something I value extremely highly due to many benefits it provides for learners. Compassion, introspection, and curiosity are all required in creative writing, as they are in any other art form. In stories and poems, writers preserve the world as they see it, and also imagine a better world by creating it in their works. As a result, the value of creative writing lies in its ability to represent the world in a straightforward and unfiltered manner. Anyone who writes creatively, regardless of genre or style, contributes to our ability to explore the human experience, disseminate new ideas, and advocate for a better society. Whether you write stories for yourself or to share with a larger audience, creative writing improves the world. Furthermore, in this class, it provides a safe space for learners to write and to be social; improving their social skills too.

In regard to the class itself, it will be structured and centred around creating a ‘book/short story’. This provides the learner with an opportunity to write something that they themselves want to write about. Of course, as the teacher, I will be providing guidance as to the planning aspect of the book/short story. As a new learner joins, they will be spending time planning what characters, plot, setting and genre they want their book/short story to be about. The plan itself is supposed to be a ‘bare bones’ type of plan where the learner is only planning the ‘essentials’ of what is needed to start off their book/short story. The logic of this is that stories tend to chop and change frequently once you begin to write, to the point where they can deviate entirely from the plan. Therefore, a bare bones plan saves a lot of time for the learner in the future. Thereafter, the learner will proceed to write ‘Chapter One’ which is capped at between 300-400 words per chapter. The purpose of this is to allow time in the class to provide feedback on the chapter before the learner writes ‘Chapter Two’. Through this consistent feedback method, learners, over time, will begin to see improvements in their writing when they compare ‘Chapter One’ to ‘Chapter Five’, for example. Please note that I will, firstly, be focusing on the learner’s writing technique before I begin providing feedback on their actual story itself. Once I am confident in the learner’s ability to write clearly and coherently, then I will start providing feedback relating to narrative, plot, character development and more.

*Learners are required to use 'Google Docs' to write their book/short story. This make it easier for me track the feedback part of the class.*

Please message me if you have any further questions!
