Description

Class Experience

Learners will improve their listening and speaking skills in English. They will also increase their vocabulary and their confidence level in responding to various topics of conversation in English.
While not covering sensitive or high-risk topics, we will cover current event topics (for example, COVID-19's impact around the world), which may generate more passionate responses. As this class is for 15-18 year olds, I expect all learners to handle subjects maturely and with appropriate respect for differing classmate's viewpoints. As a teacher with experience in public and private high schools and college, I have experience in managing these types of discussions and facilitating them with the purpose of promoting accurate and fluent use of the English language. Again, there will be no tolerance for foul, inappropriate, or demeaning language nor for lack of respect towards the teacher or other learners.
No homework will be assigned, but often additional helpful websites with information about the week's topic will be provided by the instructor should a leaner want to delve deeper into the topic on their own.
Beyond Outschool technology and internet requirements to participate in the classroom, it is recommended that students have notebook paper and a pencil/pen to jot down notes, ideas, and new vocabulary. Parents/guardians are encouraged to preview newinlevels.com and cnn.com.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Only informal assessment will be done based on conversation in class. No letter grades will be given. After attending three sessions minimally, a letter explaining demonstrated conversational proficiency level may be requested by the parents, guardians, or learner within one week from the date of last attendance.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will NOT cover controversial "hot" topics involving sex, gender identity, abortion, and racism; however, we will cover topics involving differing political views (for example, discussing U.S. trade restrictions on Cuba) and different perspectives (for example, balancing public health concerns and personal rights). Multiple viewpoints will likely be shared by different learners. The teacher will facilitate the discussion to stay on track and to make sure that all learners have the opportunity to share their understanding and viewpoints, which is especially beneficial when learners are coming from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. There will be zero tolerance for demeaning anyone's viewpoint or for any inappropriate language (foul language, racial comments, or degrading language in general). Learners will be initially warned if they participate in any of these behaviors and may be removed from the class. NO refunds will be given. Parents/guardians will be notified if their child is warned or removed; the instructor may opt NOT to allow these learners to enroll in subsequent sessions.
