Class experience

The main goal is for all students to improve independent reading, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, students will improve written communication with an organized formal writing structure. These skills will help students grow towards more challenging writing assignments with improved confidence.
I believe great writers read great books. My passion is to teach beginner writers how to find their written voice and appreciation of the written word. I have been teaching formal writing methods in our homeschool and in co-ops for the past five years.

Books are my love language. I want your student to know the joy of reading deeply. I want your student to examine, question, and think critically about what they read. I want your student to know they can write confidently and understand that their words have meaning in this world. This is why I teach.
Students will need the following:
1. Adventure, Historical Fiction: "The Apothecary" by Maile Meloy
2. Science Fiction: "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne
3. Fantasy: "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien
4. Classic Literature: "Shakespeare Stories" by Leon Garfield - note: physical copies of this book can be challenging to find in stock on the common retail sites. However, the Kindle version on Amazon is affordable and readily available, here https://amzn.to/39mANtC. You can download the Kindle app for free on your computer or tablet. If you prefer the physical book, try here - https://bit.ly/3hO5yfM OR here - https://bit.ly/2ZclVwi.
5. Mystery: "Book Scavenger, Book 1" by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman
6. Dictionary and Thesaurus or access to online version
7. Looseleaf notebook paper
8. Three ring binder for writing assignments and teacher provided grammar worksheets
9. Students will receive weekly grammar worksheets and notes from the class presentation. Students may want to print these pages or save them digitally.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Content Warning: Please be aware that there are depictions of battle and violence, sea monsters and dragons, menacing mythical creatures, death, and sorcery across the various books in this course. In "The Apothecary", there is a brief and innocent first kiss scene between the two main characters and a quick mention of a neighbor being drunk which is why a main character was able to escape unnoticed. Furthermore, the Shakespeare comedies include themes of love and deception. However, the book we read, "Shakespeare Stories", covers these themes in an age appropriate manner. If you have concerns for your reader, please preview these books and feel free to contact me with questions. In accordance with Outschool policy, all classroom discussion and teaching will be presented from a secular perspective.

External Sources: On occasion, this class uses Blooket.com to play review games created by the teacher. No account sign up is necessary. Games are shared on the Zoom screen while students are given a link to play the game live with the teacher and classmates.
