Class Experience

Take a look at the world through the eyes of an engineer!

Engineers are creative problem solvers who shift our ideas of what is possible. In this one-time workshop, students will learn more about how engineers think about problem solving while growing in their ability to look creatively at the world around them. We'll explore the intersections of wants, needs, technologies, and innovation.

We open with a discussion about how engineers identify problems worth solving before turning our attention to the problem-solving tools of engineering design. Then we'll put our creative problem solving skills to the test with at least one hands-on design challenge.

To get the most out of this workshop, students should come with the following items:
* Metal paper clips and/or shapable metal wire
* Needle-nose pliers with wire cutter
* A piece of cardboard (ideally corrugated, less than 1 square foot)
* Rubber bands and/or elastic cord
* Scissors that can be used to cut cardboard

Learning Goals

At the end of this workshop, students will:
- Identify strategies engineers use to select problems worth solving
- Understand that problems emerge during creative problem solving
- Explore how engineering design tools can be used to solve problems

Parental Guidance
Please review safe tool use with your learner. It is especially important that students can safely use a needle-nose pliers to reshape and cut wire.
