Engineers Solve Problems
An Introduction to Engineering Thinking for Creative Problem Solving
Take a look at the world through the eyes of an engineer! Engineers are creative problem solvers who shift our ideas of what is possible. In this one-time workshop, students will learn more about how engineers think about problem solving while growing in their ability to look creatively at the world around them. We'll explore the intersections of wants, needs, technologies, and innovation. We open with a discussion about how engineers identify problems worth solving before turning our...
At the end of this workshop, students will: - Identify strategies engineers use to select problems worth solving - Understand that problems emerge during creative problem solving - Explore how engineering design tools can be used to solve problems
I am a mechanical engineer and engineering educator who specializes in teaching students about engineering design.
Homework OfferedStudents may be interested in continuing to refine their engineering projects or tackle another design project shared during the workshop.
1 file available upon enrollment* Metal paper clips and/or shapable metal wire * Needle-nose pliers with wire cutter * A piece of cardboard (ideally corrugated, less than 1 square foot) * Rubber bands and/or elastic cord * Scissors that can be used to cut cardboard
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Please review safe tool use with your learner. It is especially important that students can safely use a needle-nose pliers to reshape and cut wire.
