Engineering Summer Project S’more Solar Oven Cooking
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Students will engineer a solar oven to melt chocolate and or a marshmallow for a s’more. Class will begin with learning about solar energy, and how solar ovens cook food. Next students will learn about the design for their solar oven. Students will then engineer their solar oven using the materials listed below. Finally, students will put their solar oven to the test after class. Students will share their results and or pictures by posting on the class page. *The solar oven works best...
Students will: ~ Use engineering skills and creativity ~ Apply problem solving, analytical and spatial thinking skills ~ Develop a growth mindset ~ Collaborate and communicate with peers
A box (Ideas: pizza box, shoe box, Amazon box, etc) Aluminum Foil Roll Scissors Black construction paper (Optional) Tape Glue Plastic cling wrap or Clear Plastic Gallon Bag (Optional ) Ruler, Stick, Pencil, or Dowel (Something to hold the box lid open) * Students will use their oven to cook s'mores after class. Item options for s'mores could include: Chocolate Graham Cracker Marshmallow
* Students need a flat hard surface to work on. A hole will need to be cut in the top of the box. Parents will need to help or be present to make sure scissors and safety is used. When using the solar oven to cook safety the temperature will increase. Monitoring and caution should be used when cooking with the oven. Safety First! Guidelines for All Classes (For Parents and Students) - Work under the supervision of an adult at home - All materials are to be used carefully and with caution - Clean up and properly dispose of materials after class - Wash your hands =) All activities in Ms. Sarah’s classes are to be done under the supervision of an adult, who is responsible for the safety of the student. Ms. Sarah is not responsible for any injuries or accidents resulted in class or after class.
I teach to inspire students, of all ages, to learn how to think. Students become inspired to learn when they can ask questions, take risks, make mistakes, and reflect. Classes include 1 to 1 tutoring, experiments, investigations, design...
