Class Experience

In the class, students will explore topics on artificial intelligence, environmental sustainability and diversity in the workplace. Each week, we will select a topic - for example, should robots replace nurses. I will provide an overview of the concerns on the pro and con sides. Then, students will get time to prepare their own thoughts and discuss their ideas and perspectives in the class. Discussions will be in a variety of formats (such as debates, role-playing, case studies, etc).

In this course, students will get to experience common dilemmas and ethical issues faced on the individual, organizational and governmental level in the realm of engineering and society. This class not only exposes students to current events in a safe space, but allows students to develop ethical perspectives on real issues. Students also practice communication skills, debate skills, independent thinking, group work and most importantly, critical thinking.

Week of July 25: Should recreational drones be flown in cities?
Week of Aug 1: Should robots replace nurses?
Week of Aug 8: Should taxis be eliminated by self-driving cars?
Week of Aug 15: Should school become completely virtual?
Week of Aug 22: Should genetically modified foods be labelled?
Week of Aug 29: Should animals be used for research?
Week of Sept 5: Is it important to explore space?

Week of Sept 19: Does social media improve human connection?

Parental Guidance
Dear parents/guardians, In this course, students will learn about some of modern science's greatest ethical dilemmas. As a facilitator, I will encourage students to evaluate multiple viewpoints and adopt a viewpoint for the purpose of practicing their debating skills and using fact-based arguments. Students will not be asked to share, comment on or promote personal opinions regarding the topic in discussion. I will mention this at the beginning of each class. I would encourage you to do the same with your child. Best regards, Afifa
