US Grade 4 - 7
All around Europe, we can see achievements of medieval engineers. Impressive castles and cathedrals stand as a testament to their creative genius. Do you have what it takes to tackle medieval engineering challenges? In this class, we're going to dive deep into the technological achievements of medieval engineers while making our own models. Because it's so important that engineers brainstorm ideas, test their design, and improve their design, we devote multiple weeks to each major design project. The first section of the course is dedicated to strong structures. We'll brainstorm structural designs that can make large stained glass windows possible by comparing Romanesque architecture (with its famed arches) to Gothic architecture (with its flying buttresses). Student engineers will put their masonry skills to work by building their own castle keeps using sugar cubes and frosting. We will flex our critical thinking muscles to identify problems solved by medieval engineers. Additionally, students will practice drawing like medieval engineers by sketching top and side views of their creations. The section section of the course is all about designing siege machines. In our class discussions, we'll talk about the differences between catapults and trebuchets. Students will work on designing their own siege machine with supplies they have around the house, sharing their progress along the way. I highly recommend sourcing materials from the recycling bin. We'll wrap up with a final section of the course dedicated to armor. Students will explore how medieval blacksmiths forged armor and swords before trying to make their own (cardboard) suit of armor. Students may submit their projects for a grade.

Supply List
Students should have access to a digital camera and a sketchbook to document their progress. Projects can use diverse supplies, although it is highly recommended that students have access to sugar cubes and frosting for their masonry project.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm an engineer committed to giving students amazing experiences in math, science, and engineering. I believe that learning happens when kids ask questions and explore their interests. I look forward to helping your kids leverage their curiosity and see math, science, and engineering at work in the world around them.
I purposefully design classes around real-world projects to engage students more deeply in learning. I believe that kids learn best when they have the opportunity to create. As much as is possible, I encourage students to use their hands and build their own models.
As a kid, I was constantly looking for new experiences with math, science, and engineering. I conducted every experiment from Mr. Wizard's Supermarket Science and begged my parents for more math practice. I took all the advanced math and science course offered by my high school, attended Space Academy and Advanced Space Academy, competed in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair three years in a row, was a semi-finalist in the Science Talent Search, and graduated magna cum laude from Boston University while majoring in mechanical engineering. I also hold a MS in Engineering Education from Purdue University.
I currently teach math, science, and engineering courses to kids ages 6 and up. When I'm not teaching, I love to play with my cat, curl up with a good book, visit historic places, or watch a movie.
If you have any thoughts about a class you wish I would offer or a time you hope I can schedule a class, please send me a message. All of my best teaching ideas have come directly from my students as we learn and explore together.
