Advanced Level
Extend student's learning with this Reading Camp while having fun!  Learners will explore the idea of archetypes through encounters with characters, our world, and experiences by using fictional texts, informational texts, and short films. 
This camp has activities specifically designed for advanced learners by using class discussions, Socratic Seminar, and higher level thinking graphic organizers.  The concepts of theme, mood, symbols, tone and point of view will be covered during the camp.  At the end of each day we will end the class with a fun game of Blooket to review what we learned! (Time permitted)

The following texts will be used during the camp (texts will be provided):
Day 1: "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros
Day 2: "Lon Po Po: A Red Riding Hood Story from China" by Ed Young
Days 3: Biographies of Jackie Robinson and Lin-Manuel Miranda
Day 4: "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Hans Christian Andersen
Learning Goals
Students will analyze texts to make inferences, analyze characters, settings, and social encounters.

Lesson 1:
Encounters
 Students are introduced to the concept of encounters and explore how encounter generalizations are evident in the short story "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros.

Lesson 2:
Archetypes
 Students will learn about the origins of archetypes and will begin to see how archetypes are part of every culture by looking at the Chinese version of Little Red Riding Hood.

Lesson 3:
Heroes
 Students will learn about encounters that make up a hero's journey .  Students will watch "The Controller", a short animated film clip, and read the biography of Lin-Manuel Miranda to examine a hero's journey.

Lesson 4:
Encounters as Experiences
 Students will examine how encounters between situational archetypes and character archetypes determine perspectives through the reading of the short story "The Emperor's New Clothes".

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some classes we may play Blooket to review the text of the day if time permits. I will provide the link to the website, and students will join with a game code in which I provide. While students have the option to create a free Blooket or Gimkit account, it is not required to play the game. Any video clips will be shared from the teacher screen.
