US Grade 6 - 9
If you LOVE mythology, you've come to the right place. As an author and teacher, Mr. LeCara especially enjoys peeling back story layers, discussing and discovering with his students what makes them enduring. So many of yesterday's myths are integrated into today's stories... stories in books, movies, television, cartoons, and even advertising. Throughout this course, we will explore the interconnected stories, characters, and themes established in Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman...
LEARNING GOALS. o Develop an appreciation for the enduring nature of myths and their relevance in contemporary storytelling. o Understand the similarities and common themes shared by myths across different cultures and civilizations. o Analyze myths as a reflection of the cultures in which they originated, gaining insights into their beliefs, values, and traditions. o Enhance critical thinking skills by examining the purpose and symbolism behind mythological narratives. o Improve reading comprehension through the exploration of various mythological texts. o Describe the thoughts, opinions, and questions that arise as they read, view, or listen to a text. o Defend their interpretations of literature by producing in-depth, validated responses. o Extend meaning by analyzing elements of fiction and mythology. o Foster creative expression by engaging in writing activities inspired by myths, such as summaries, mini essays, and observations. o Cultivate cultural awareness and empathy by exploring diverse mythological traditions. o Develop research skills by investigating additional information, stories, and facts related to the myths studied. o Foster collaborative learning and participation through class discussions and group activities. o Deepen understanding of storytelling techniques and narrative elements through the analysis of myths. o Understand and appreciate that literature represents, recreates, shapes, and explores human thoughts and experiences. As a writer and experienced English teacher, Mr. LeCara's passion for mythology is evident in his deep appreciation and respect for these ancient stories. In this course, students will go beyond simply accessing ancient myths and embark on an exciting journey to explore stories that have been passed down through different cultures. They will discover the remarkable similarities that exist across these myths, including shared characters and themes, transcending geographical boundaries. Beyond uncovering the connections between ancient myths and contemporary works in film, literature, advertising, and even space exploration, Mr. LeCara's ultimate goal is to ignite a love for mythology that inspires students to explore diverse cultures and narratives.
