Class Experience

Students that participate in this class will get many things out of it. Together we will explore the areas surrounding screens. We will find out in what ways they can be useful, and in which ways they can have negative effects on our overall health and well-being. The idea is not to get children to completely off all electronics permanently, but rather learn a healthy balance between the two.

No background knowledge is required.

No homework, except to practice skills learned in class.

Progress will be evaluated on class participation, how much the child has been able to disconnect from phones, tablets etc.

Week 1- We will be discussing the problems with too much screen time. We will also explore how our messages can be misunderstood over screens. We will also dive into a power point on healthy communications face to face, and why that is preferred over texting or messaging.

Week 2- So we know the problems, but how do we change? We will answer this question, along with how to break any other bad habit. We will talk about ways in which we can break the cycle of going on our phones and other activities to fill that gap. I will work on coming up with a plan with each student individually for their specific action plan.

Week 3- We will explore how we can use electronics for beneficial ways. We will discuss how nothing online is secret and the dangers of sending messages or any other item over apps.

Week 4- Track your screen time assignment after guessing how much time each person spends on electronics.

I have successfully taught other groups of children the healthy balance of screen time. I have 15 years of experience working with children of all ages and abilities from ages 2-17. I have gone to college for Early childhood education and psychology. I am very excited to start teaching this class, it generally is fast-paced but very fun. Children generally give very positive feedback.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have experience with teens spending just a little too much time on electronics. Think about it, electronics are everywhere today. I will be teaching about why it has become normal to have cell phones and computers everywhere you go and how to balance them in a healthy way. it’s not an all or nothing lifestyle. We will work together to discover ways we can break this cycle, and the health benefits of doing so.
