Endangered Monarch: Mini-Seminar - Scientific Reasons for Their Decline

In this class we will discuss more than habitat destruction's role in the severe decline of Monarch butterfly populations. We will look at Monarch disease and what causes it, as well as misconceptions about milkweed and the dangers of planting the wrong varieties. Students will learn why hand-raising Monarch butterflies from a caterpillar may actually contribute to the species' decline. Students will come away from this class with a deeper knowledge of the perfect storm of events responsible for the decline of the Monarch butterfly species. They will also be empowered to act - if they so choose - to be an advocate for Monarchs in their respective communities.
I am an active participant in several programs whose goal it is to strengthen Monarch survival rates. I have a degree in Environmental Science and am certified by the the National Wildlife Federation as an official "Monarch Steward," a certification that requires dozens of hours of classroom study as well as significant field work.
