Did you love "Encanto?" Did you wonder what country, authors, and styles of literature inspired it? "Encanto" is Disney's first foray into the fascinating genre of magical realism. Students are welcome to come and learn more about Columbia, the features of magical realism, and authors and directors like Guillermo del Toro, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julio Cortazar, and Pablo Neruda. This class will begin with a close look at the features of magical realism as a genre. Then as a class, we will discuss examples from the movie of how these features played out in the animated film. I will introduce and recommend works of magical realism that are age-appropriate as well as briefly introduce some very famous works which are not (Specifically del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" and Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude.") Finally, we will play a brief game of Kahoot to review the facts we learned. I love literature and I love discussing it with students. This is an interactive and conversational class that will bridge the gap between a very popular Disney movie and the culture and genre that inspired it.
Learning Goals
Students will understand and recall the basic features of magical realism, be able to name 2-3 examples of magical realism as a genre, and will be able to identify the features of magical realism in "Encanto."

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am eager to have your learner join the students from 5-50 to whom I have taught English. Although my original BA is in Psychology, I have taught both ESL and English at three different Universities abroad. I love students and I love literature. I am eager to help North American students get a worldwide perspective on literature drawing from my own experiences as a reader and a traveler.
