Class Experience

Empower Girls is an ongoing social club where young girls, between the ages of 6-8 years old, can build confidence through engaging ice breakers, games, journaling, doodles, and more! Like so many young girls, I struggled with self-confidence through my elementary and middle school years, so I know how hard it can be to make new friends and stand confident in your own skin.

This social club is here to provide a safe space for learners to discuss issues that may be difficult to share in the presence of the opposite sex. Some of the topics we will cover include, but are not limited to:

*Believing in yourself
*Finding the right friends
*Sharing hobbies and interests
*Everyday emotions
*Dreams and Goals
*How to handle bullies
*Body image
*Positive self-talk. .. And so much more!

The first 10 classes will go as follows:

Week of June 13th: "Believe in Yourself": What does this mean? How do you see yourself? Learners will draw a self portrait and discuss ways we disguise and reveal our true selves (Ice breakers, craft, discussion game)

Week of July 4th: "Emotions": What are some of the different emotions you feel right now? Learners will be encouraged to share their favorite emojis through a fun ice breaker and have the opportunity to draw/write different emotions they may keep bottled up. We'll discuss healthy ways to release negative emotions (Ice breakers, craft, discussion, game)

Week of July 11th: "Who am I?": Learners will pick a handful of adjectives that they believe describe their personality and share why. Learners will celebrate their past accomplishments and identify people in their lives that encourage them. Through an interactive game, we'll explore dream jobs, goals, and aspirations. (Ice breakers, craft, discussion, game)

Week of July 18th: "Who are my friends?": Learners will brainstorm characters from their favorite movies or shows that they'd like as their friend. We'll discuss qualities of a good friend and the importance of having an open mind about people. (Ice breakers, craft, discussion, game)

Week of July 25th: "How to handle bullies": No one likes a bully, and unfortunately, many bullies have been bullied themselves. But empowered girls break this cycle! We'll discuss ways to show kindness to ourselves and others through establishing boundaries and limits within these difficult and inevitable encounters with friends and bullies alike. (Ice breakers, journal, discussion, game)

Week of August 1st: "Let me see you be brave!": Fear is a tricky one, isn't it? In this class, we will share some of our fears, how they make us feel, and ways we can face them with confidence! (Ice breakers, doodle, discussion, game)

Week of August 15th "Impossible... I'm possible!": Learners will explore all the tasks that they are capable of doing and those they endeavor to accomplish. (Ice breakers, doodle, discussion, game)

Week of August 22nd: "Body talk": Social media tries to tell us what true beauty is... but empowered girls know that every body is beautiful just the way it is! In this class, we will discuss all the things we like about our bodies and share the strengths that make us unique! (Ice breaker, journaling, discussion, game)

Week of August 30th: "Show yourself some love": Learners will explore ways they can show love and appreciation to themself. We'll discuss the importance of positive self-talk and how we can care for ourselves by having clean living spaces and healthy hygiene. (Ice breaker, doodle, discussion, game)

Week of September 13th: ""The power of gratitude": Being grateful is one of the best kept secrets of life! When we embrace each day with gratitude, joy follows close behind! Learners will draw all the things they are thankful for and will have the opportunity to write "thank you" in class. (Ice breaker, doodle, discussion, game)

So, are you ready to be encouraged? Are you ready to be inspired? Are you ready to be empowered to be all that you were created to be? If so, I hope to see you very soon!

Parental Guidance
Parent Disclaimer: While we will touch upon topics of self-confidence, positive self-talk, and everyday emotions young girls may experience, parents should be aware that I am not a counselor nor is this class meant to provide any type of group therapy. This class is for your learners to be able to comfortably express themselves through drawing and age-relevant discussions. I encourage and invite parents to ask what their learners discuss in our classes as this is an opportunity to provide a safe space for your learners to share.
Supply List
Paper, pencil/pen, and either crayons, colored pencils, markers, or all three! This class will involve doodling and some journaling, so it is ideal for learners to have a place to keep their work (journal, binder, folder). Additionally, learners are encouraged to purchase their own copy of the book "Find Your Rainbow" by Jenipher Lyn. While it is not a requirement of this ongoing course, learners may find they are able to express themselves more freely in writing and doodling in their own personal copy of the book. This social club will not be limited to this book alone, but we will refer to it often.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome to my classroom where I believe every student has a purpose, value, voice, and place! The classes I offer range from character building classes to social groups and beyond. My professional journey and experience has been ANYTHING but traditional! That said, I earned a Masters of Science in Mathematics Education from University of Central Florida, as well as a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland. Upon graduation, I traveled abroad where I homeschooled a family for a year, taught English and Empower Girl classes in remote villages in the Dominican Republic, composed curriculum and collaborated with an organization in Africa, tutored middle and high school students in math, as well as having taught various character building lessons over the years. More recently, I taught ESL online to students in China and have enjoyed all the amazing connections I have made across the world! It brings me joy to encourage and empower youth to become all that they are created to be, and it is my hope your student leaves my classroom inspired!
