Do you have a kind and caring kid that wants to help people? Or does your child love solving problems? This class combines empathy skills with critical thinking. Great inventions originate from a problem that needed to be solved. Amazing inventions originated from having empathy for those around us. In this ongoing course, students will meet weekly to learn about a new invention created to help other people. We will use this as inspiration to show the limitless possibilities of empathetic and hard-working individuals. Each week, the students will receive a new prompt about an imaginary person who must overcome an obstacle in their daily life. Students will express empathy as they identify barriers and reflect on another person's emotions. Depending on the amount enrolled, students will work in teams or individually to design an invention that will help the imaginary student. Students can sketch their design or use building bricks to create a prototype to share with the class. Students will articulate their idea and have the opportunity to provide feedback on their classmates' inventions. The class will reflect on how their worldview has changed due to meeting this imaginary student. I will informally assess students' as they verbalize their thoughts and describe their invention. **This class was also offered last summer. If your child participated in this class last summer, some of these prompts will be familiar to your child!
