Students will learn in a variety of manners during this course. They will learn through direct instruction, collaborative learning with peers (such as turn and talk and sharing out), visuals such as videos and props, real-life examples, and opportunities for application (such as hypothetical scenarios and how to respond with them with the content learned). Students will improve their understanding of five emotions (happiness, anger, stress, sadness, and uncertainty), gain a basic understanding of what exactly emotions are, and will take away numerous coping skills to utilize in their every-day lives.
I am offering this class in particular because of my personal experiences with emotional wellness, and how important it is to me in my personal life and for those I teach. I am a good teacher for this course because I have used coping strategies to help students one-on-one and in groups while teaching to cope with feelings (especially at the kindergarten-level). I have learned an immense amount about emotions and have resources to use that are age-appropriate and important for students to learn at a young age so that they might grow and prosper throughout their life in terms of physical and mental health. This is a unique offering with my experience teaching this at a young age, and I was fortunate enough to be taught these concepts at an early age. So, I want to continue that healthy pattern for others.
The only "homework" assigned is to practice using coping skills taught. Students will also be given ideas on how to use a daily journal.
I will provide any handouts or PowerPoint presentations to the families. No materials are necessary to purchase, but it would be helpful to have paper and pencil on-hand so students can eventually make their own journals.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learner progress is assessed through informal anecdotal notes (which will only include initials and will be 100% confidential). These notes will determine students' participation in class discussion and other activities, which will give the instructor an idea of where they are in their emotional awareness, and what needs might still need addressed.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
It is important to note that students are free to express themselves in this space. This is considered a safe-space, but if any inappropriate content or behavior is discussed, I will be sure to immediately address it.
