Students will be introduced to the poet Emily Dickinson. Topics include a brief biography of the poet, a sampling of her poems including "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" and "I'm Nobody! Who are You?" Additionally, we will define some poetic terms: scansion, meter, and rhyme, and discuss technique and meaning in the selected works. Students are encouraged to participate in discussion and will have the opportunity to begin a short poem of their own. (However, writing a poem is not required.) I am happy to comment on completed poems submitted at the end of the class. Students are not required to have any prior knowledge of poetry.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Teacher Sharon. I have a BA and an MA in English with concentrations in literature, creative writing, and film studies. I taught and developed courses at the community college level for fifteen years, regularly teaching English, mythology, composition, grammar, literature, and film studies, seated and online. Additionally, I taught AP high school students in these same classes as part of the "Early College Program" in North Carolina. Many hours of my time were spent tutoring students in the Writing Center. Also, I worked a few semesters and summers as an adjunct film instructor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Currently, I teach online ESL classes to children ages 3-12 in China, and in July 2020 I began teaching phonics and early reading skills classes on Outschool. I love working with small children as well as older students! My favorite classes to teach are film classes, and I plan to develop and teach film courses through Outschool, along with poetry, mythology, and literature classes. Currently on Outschool, I teach phonics and early reading skills to preschool and kindergarten age children.
I believe that learning can be fun, and I strive to make classes both enjoyable and informative.
Also, I enjoy writing fiction and non-fiction, and I dabble in poetry. My writing credits include short stories published in Windhover Literary Magazine and honorable mention in The 2018 Writers' Workshop of Asheville Memoir Contest. Additionally, I created supplemental teaching materials for the textbook Understanding Movies, 12th Edition. I believe the supplements continue to be used and adapted for newer editions.
My husband and I raised two boys, both of whom are grown now, but our nest is far from empty! We share it with two adorable fur babies. They rescued us and fill our home with lots of love, mischief, and dog toys. When I have time, I also enjoy paper crafts and occasionally participate in local craft fairs. I am excited about this opportunity to teach the subjects I love here on Outschool, and I can’t wait to meet Outschool’s community of learners!
