Class Experience

During this class, students will be led through an exciting science experiment! Before the experiment begins, we will discuss what the students already know about chemical reactions. The students will then mix common household items: hydrogen peroxide, yeast, and dish soap, in a container to produce their own chemical reaction! When the items are mixed together, they produce a foam that oozes out of the bottle. As it is oozing out of the container, it resembles toothpaste being squeezed out of a tube!

After we have completed the experiment, we will discuss the basics of what happened in our reaction. The students will learn what a chemical reaction is, what reaction occurred in their experiment, how their foam was produced!

The students do not need any prior knowledge in order to complete this class. To instruct this course, I will complete the science experiment with the students in order to model. I also love to create meaningful discussion in the classroom! I have my bachelor's in elementary education, so I am certified to teach all elementary core subjects. I also did 2 internships in 2nd and 4th grade where I taught science classes specifically! I love teaching science because the hands-on learning helps students to learn by discovery!

Learning Goals

The students will learn the basics of chemical reactions through conducting their own experiment.

Parental Guidance
The student will be mixing common household items such as hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and yeast. When we mix the ingredients, a foam will be produced that will ooze out of the bottle. If the student's skin is sensitive to hydrogen peroxide, they will not want to touch the foam that is produced from their reaction. But, if the student is not sensitive to hydrogen peroxide, it is safe to touch! If you would like to help the student measure the ingredients, you can help guide them, but I will also be walking them through the experiment.
Supply List

1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide
Dish soap
1 teaspoon of yeast
2 tablespoons of warm water
