Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
All children don’t learn to read at the same pace and time. Some will learn early, and some a little later. But we can all find joy in reading books.

The Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems are fun and easy to read but always have a good positive message about friendship. The books also repeat certain words and make it easier to remember and recognize them.

This book club is for children who can already read a little bit. This class won’t teach students how to read, but we will do activities to strengthen their reading.

We will have class twice a week for 40 minutes each time.

The first class of each week will start with me reading the book so the student can follow along and hear the words.

We will then go over the longer and more complicated words together on the whiteboard. The words will also be in a document you can find in the classroom on Outschool.

The last thing we will do is read it together. Each student gets to read a couple of pages in class.

If they get stuck on a long word, we will use the words on the whiteboard to remember how to read the word.

For the second class, the student will get a homework sheet with a few questions to “analyze” the book and an assignment to do by themselves.

For example, the questions can be:

What was your favorite part of the book?

How can you tell what Elephant feels in the book?

How would you feel if someone broke your new toy?

The assignment can be:

Draw a picture of Elephant and Piggie

Find all the words that start with the letter A in the book.

Read the book to someone and ask what they think.

For the second class of the week, we will discuss the book.

We will go over the longer, more complicated words once more.

And we will read the book together again.

We will read these books in the following order.

There Is a Bird on Your Head

I Love My New Toy

My New Friend Is So Fun

Let’s Go for a Drive

Elephants Can’t Dance

You can find the books at the library or at an online bookstore for about 5-10$ each. It is always a good idea to familiarize the student with the books beforehand.

The students need to be able to read on a beginner level and be able to recognize all the letters.
