Class Experience

Over the course of 4 weeks, we will be reading the following Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems:

Session 1: We will read "Should I Share my Ice Cream?" and we will learn about what a Reader's Theater is. We will learn the role of actors and narrators. We will also practice the Reader's Theater.

Session 2: We will read "Today I Will Fly" and we will practice the Reader's Theater and focus on using expression when reading.

Session 3: We will read "A Big Guy Took my Ball" and we will practice the Reader's Theater and we will focus on making sure that we are ready when it is our turn.

Session 4: We will read "There is a Bird on your Head" and we will practice the Reader's Theater. We will review all the skills we have learned.

We will begin each class by reading the book for that week and familiarizing ourselves with the story. The rest of the class time will be spent reading through the Reader's Theater script. Students will learn about the basic roles of the narrator and the actors. They will also learn about the differences between a Reader's Theater and a play. We will take turns trying out different parts and working on becoming more fluent readers and using expression. Students will be provided with the scripts for each session. No acting experience is required! The scripts are written at a first grade reading level. There is no extra work outside of class time.
