Class Experience

In this 8-week course, students will learn about the 7 elements of art: line, color, value, shape, form, space, and texture. Each week students will learn about one of these elements and look at famous artwork and artists that incorporate these elements. Students will be asked about what they see in the artwork and have a discussion about what they think the topic of the week means and how they would use it in their art.

Next, students will make art of their own based on the element of that week. Though this is taught mainly though a directed drawing type of teaching style, the students will be encouraged to add anything they want to make their work unique to them. We will draw, paint, and make paper collages using a variety of subjects that include cakes, robots, and crazy hair days.

Art element, project, and medium for each week:
Week 1: Line- crazy hair, drawing
Week 2: Color- color wheel, paper collage
Week 3: Value- colored sky with silhouette, painting
Week 4: Shape- robots, paper collage
Week 5: Form- cake and sweets, drawing
Week 6: Space- landscapes, drawing
Week 7: Texture- monsters, drawing
Week 8: Combining 7 elements into one artwork, student's choice of medium
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of the seven elements of art, line, color, value, shape, form, space, and texture. Students will continue to develop skills in artistic expression and artistic decision making.

Teacher expertise and credentials
The two things I love most in life is art and teaching! I have a degree in art education and have lots of experience working with young students. I think that basic understanding of art techniques and theories are important things that students should learn to not only further their art skills but also to see the beauty in the world around them!
