Class Experience

This is a story-based course that will focus on building vocabulary, reading and responding to simple texts, and conversation.

Thematic vocabulary and grammar build upon each other each week. There is an emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking about different topics.

Students will learn Spanish relevant to their lives using teacher-created stories, songs, and in-class speaking practice and games. Sessions follow the lives of a group of friends as students learn about community, community workers, home life and what the child wants to be when they grow up, as well as beginning geography (drawing maps). Some aspects of grammar will be taught as needed. Students will complete oral (and optionally, visual) projects that will be presented in designated classes. Their work will culminate in a class book that all in their section get a copy of.

Some prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary. It is suggested to have taken the Elementary Spanish 1 or 1b (for those with entry level Spanish), or have other prior Spanish knowledge.
***Elementary Spanish 1 covers how to introduce oneself, tell about oneself (age, birthday), months of the year, numbers to 100, and talk about people in the family. The second half of Spanish 1, and the Spanish 1b course, cover where one goes to school, what is done at school, days of the week, hobbies. Conversation skills to talk about these subjects are integrated in these topics. Reading Spanish, and pronunciation are also main topics.

Some reading ability is helpful, but not required, and will be practiced. 80/20 Spanish/English, using stories and comprehensible input.

Learning Goals

By the end of class, students will have the tools to talk about places in the community, jobs people do, and what they would like to do when they are older. They will also discuss simple geography in connection with community. They will complete projects that will be presented during the course of the class.

Weekly content includes the following:
Places in the community
Community workers and what they do
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Prepositions and giving directions
Geographical terms and connections with community
Cultural connections

I am a longtime homeschooler (over 16 years and counting!), and an experienced, licensed teacher with endorsements in bilingual education and TESOL. I have also earned a Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction in Early Childhood Education (birth through Grade 3).

I have been speaking Spanish for over 25 years, have homeschooled preschool through high school in a bicultural and bilingual home for the past 20 years, and have tutored and taught all ages bilingually in schools and tutoring settings for over 10 years. I have graduated one, and continue to homeschool my other child.

I offer several series of Spanish classes, using familiar translated stories, native Spanish stories, songs, and poems. I teach practical, useable Spanish that can be used right away, and talk about familiar themes interesting to many children.

If there is a class or topic you would like to see covered or your child is interested in (in Spanish), contact me! I do my best to offer a personalized experience.

I also post information about bilingual families and learning a second language on my family language learning page, www.facebook.com/AdelanteSpanishforAll, and author titles on family language learning and language supplements.
