Elementary Science: Knowing Your Body Inside Out - Making a Model Pumping Heart
Class experience
In this introduction to the workings of the human heart, learners will make a model heart to show how one chamber and valve of the heart works. Learners will also experience taking their own pulse, observing how heart rates increase with additional activity, and how they can make their heart muscle stronger. We will also make a stethoscope replication that can be used to listen to the heart beat of a family member. We will learn heart related vocabulary such as ventricle, atrium, valve,...
As a former lower elementary teacher for 27 years, science was one of my very favorite subjects!
Learners will need a clean transparent jar, access to water, food coloring, two flexible straws, one balloon (you may want to have a spare just in case), tape, scissors, a tray or large plate to contain the slight water output. We will also make a small stethoscope with a cardboard tube, small funnel, and tape. If parents could be available for the last 15 minutes for help with assembly should it be necessary, that would be great!
Please see materials section below for suggestions on parental guidance in model heart assembly.
