Join us for 6 weeks of elementary science labs. This class can be used to supplement your current homeschooling curriculum or used as a stand alone science class. We will try out lots of labs, and add in crafts as we learn about science concepts.

Description

Class Experience

The purpose of science education is for students to understand and interpret the natural systems of the world around them. Science is driven by curiosity and reasoning and is much more than the memorization of scientists, theories, and formulas. The education of science encourages problem solving and collaboration.

Goal of science education is to teach students to:
Use and interpret science to explain the world around them
Evaluate and understand scientific theories and evidence
Investigate and generate scientific explanations
Acquire Knowledge and evidence to promote creative solutions
Mrs. Collins has 23 years of science teaching experience. She is certified in science, ag, and gifted education. She also holds national virtual teaching certification.

Please look through the list to make sure your child doesn't have allergies to the items used. If you do not have the items or do not want to use them, your child can watch the lab instead. science notebook (spiral notebook) lab coat (bought or oversized long sleeve button up shirt) safety goggles (this can also be sunglasses or swim goggles) gloves (optional, some families use winter mittens) Dancing Raisins-raisins, water, clear cup, carbonated water (or you can use Sprite or 7Up) Magic Milk-plate, skittles, milk, water Pennies-vinegar, glass containers, water, pennies Color Jump-5 cups, food coloring, paper towels Density Lab-tall jar, rubbing alcohol, vegetable oil, corn syrup, milk, honey, and other oils Lava Lamp-soda bottle empty with lid, vegetable oil, Alka seltzer tablets, food coloring *Parent prep will be needed. The class will provide a video lesson students can try while watching the video with the help of a parent, or complete later with a parent. In addition to the weekly lab video, additional labs to try will be uploaded to the Outschool wall for scientists looking for more opportunities.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
No live meetings, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please help with first week practice on the class wall, to confirm the student knows how to find the lessons. 
Teacher created labs using Scholastic Science Labs and Holt curriculum. 
Also, various Youtube summaries, and resources will be used.
