Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Popcorn is a delicious snack to eat. It can also be a fun material to use in an experiment. In this class, learners will learn about the matter, mass, and density as they complete two experiments using popcorn kernels.

How is the class structured?
The class will start with an ice breaker game that allows learners to get comfortable in class while they wait for their peers. Next, we will do introductions and talk about matter, mass, and density. Then, we will complete the experiments and analyzing our findings.

Experiment 1: Sink or float Popcorn Kernels (Density)
Learners will explore two of the states of matter and the effects they have on each other.

Experiment 2: Dancing Popcorn
Learners will explore the chemical reactions that create dancing popcorn.

At the end of class, we will review what we learned and analyze the results.

Learners will need:
Popcorn kernels (or raisins)
2 clear cups
Water
Vinegar
Baking Soda
Tablespoon
A deep tray or cooking dish
