Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
Each tutoring session will be custom tailored to the individual child.

I will compile information about your child's current reading level, grade level, strengths and weaknesses in reading and will assess your child to see what they may need for tutoring. I will ask for any information your child's teacher has provided you about your child's strengths and weaknesses in reading/spelling.

I will also communicate with you before and after tutoring sessions to ensure we are meeting the needs of your learner.

My teaching style is interactive, engaging and patient. My goal is to help your child improve their reading skills so they can be successful!

In tutoring sessions, I will use the Orton Gillingham 3 part drill to help students build their reading and spelling skills. This is a multi-sensory approach to reading and spelling that involves using 2+ senses at once (sight and sound or sound and touch, etc.) to help the brain learn reading and spelling patterns. The first part is a visual drill where I will show large cards with spelling patterns on them and the student will tell me the sound the letters make. The second part is an auditory drill where I will say a sound and they will tell me which spelling pattern makes that sound by writing it on "bumpy paper" or by writing it in sand. The third part is a blending drill where we will blend sounds together to make words.

This multisensory approach to reading helps students strengthen their phonological and phonemic awareness, practice letter-sound associations, form letters correctly, and build automaticity in their reading.
