Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
This is a one time reading comprehension and fluency class for students who are reading on a 4th grade reading.

Students must be prepared to talk and share ideas aloud with other students because practice makes perfect when it comes to reading comprehension, fluency, and building confidence with their public speaking skills, social skills, and all aspects of life.

Reading is fundamental. In order to succeed in any academic area, a student must be able to read. Knowing how to read is not a necessity, it is a requirement. For this reason, this class will focus solely on reading comprehension and fluency in this class.

How will the classes be taught?

Learners will be encouraged to not only read with accuracy, but to also read for understanding (comprehension) and great flow (fluency). We will utilize various techniques to include modeling and echo reading in order to achieve an optimal level of comprehension and fluency with each passage. I will also be asking probing questions at the end to check for understanding.

What genres will be used in this class?

We will be reading fiction stories 90% of the time. We will also discuss other genres as well.

What will the learner walk away with every class?

The learning goals/objectives for this class are that the learner will walk away being able to:
State with 100% accuracy the facts related to the passage
Correctly answer questions in relation to the passage that was read
Demonstrate improved fluency and confidence in their reading

How should the learner prepare for this class?

The learner should come prepared to talk, engage, and participate with the teacher and other learners. This is not a lecture only class so students should be comfortable being called on and participating/talking. Engaging students in conversation is how I will assess their understanding of the material.

Note: This class is for ages 8-11. Please choose the appropriate class for your learner's age, but also consider reading level well.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a former English & Language Arts (ELA) tutor/teacher assistant for grades K-5 and a current high school teacher. I see so many students that are not where they need to be when it comes to reading in high school. I think a great deal of this comes from not having that strong foundation that is needed in elementary school/younger ages.

I believe that reading is fundamental. I want students to develop a love for reading. Students should read because they love to and want to, not because they have to.

This is why I am passionate about teaching students how to reading because it is important not just in school, but in life period.
