Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This four-week live science course will explore the fundamental topics of gravity, friction, and magnetism through a series of hands-on investigations using everyday materials. The course will be delivered via interactive Pear Deck slides, engaging games, dynamic class discussions, and collaborative experiments conducted in real-time. Throughout the course, students will maintain a science notebook to document their observations and findings, enhancing their understanding of these essential scientific concepts.

Week 1: We will begin with defining a force as a push or pull, then focus on gravity. Students will conduct an investigation, following along live with the teacher, to determine how the height of a ramp affects the distance a car travels, using the scientific process. We will predict, hypothesize, test, analyze, and make conclusions using scientific measurement and creating graphs with the data to analyze results. Week 2: We will cover the topic of friction - what it is and how it affects movement of people and objects. We'll observe different types of surfaces, then as a group - students following along with the teacher, test to find out which ones create the most friction. We'll define the variable in each investigation and follow the procedures for a controlled investigation, creating graphs to analyze results. Assessment will be a Kahoot game to test understanding of vocabulary thus far.
Week 3: Magnetism will be a topic for two weeks. In the first week, we will test and classify objects by magnetic properties, explore the strength of different sizes of magnets, and learn important terms such as repel and attract as they relate to magnets. Discussion will allow students to compare their findings with others in the class. Students will participate in a Kahoot game to assess understanding of magnetism.
Week 4: Students will build and test an electromagnet to find out the connection between electric circuits and magnetism, and how electromagnets are used everywhere in life.
The final class assessment will be an interactive game in a Jeopardy type format, teacher created using Google slides.

Learning Goals

Students will understand how forces on Earth (gravity, friction, and magnetism) affect different aspects of their lives, using the scientific method and controlled investigations in each lesson.

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Gravity
After an introduction to gravity, students will conduct a controlled experiment to determine how the height of a ramp affects the distance a car travels.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
More About Gravity
Digging deeper into gravity, this class will focus on a controlled experiment to find out how dropping a ball from different heights affects the force with which it impacts the surface.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Friction
Students will explore friction by conducting a controlled experiment to determine how different road surfaces affect the distance a car will travel.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Magnetism
After exploring what students know about magnetism, they will build and test an electromagnet to determine which method creates the strongest magnet.
